An AI English tutor for reading, grammar and literature

TutorAura · Updated

School English asks a lot: read closely, explain what a writer is doing and why, write clearly, and get the grammar right. TutorAura's AI English tutor helps with all of it, from phonics and early reading in grade 1 to essay writing and literary analysis in high school.

It works like a good tutor: it asks you questions about the text, helps you find evidence, and explains grammar rules with examples, so you build the skill rather than collect answers.

Learning English as a new language? The tutor can explain grammar and give you practice questions, but it isn't a speaking or conversation app.

Key takeaways

  • Helps you understand a text by asking questions, not by summarising it for you.
  • Explains grammar and punctuation rules with examples, then checks you can apply them.
  • Gives feedback on your own writing; it won't write graded work for you.
  • Explanations match your grade, from early reading to A-level and AP-style analysis.

Example: reading a text closely

Say you're asked what a short passage suggests about a character. Instead of telling you, the tutor helps you find it yourself:

Tutor: Let's find the evidence first. Which words or actions in the passage show how Mara feels about the move?

Student: She says "fine" but slams the door.

Tutor: Good spot: what she says and what she does don't match. What does that contrast suggest about how she really feels?

You end up with an answer in your own words, backed by evidence from the text, which is exactly what teachers and exam mark schemes reward.

Example: a grammar rule you can use

Semicolons join two complete sentences that are closely related, without a conjunction:

  • Correct: The library was closed; we studied at home instead.
  • Incorrect: The library was closed; because of the storm. ("because of the storm" can't stand on its own as a sentence.)

A quick test: if you could put a full stop there and both halves would still be complete sentences, a semicolon can work. The tutor explains a rule like this, then gives you two or three sentences to fix, checking each one.

Help at every grade

  • Grades 1–5: phonics and spelling, reading comprehension, writing simple stories and recounts, basic punctuation.
  • Grades 6–8: grammar and punctuation, persuasive and descriptive writing, poetry, reading for inference.
  • Grades 9–12: essay structure, literary analysis, rhetoric, unseen texts, and exam skills such as SAT Reading and Writing.

The tutor adjusts its language to your grade: simple words and short steps for younger students, precise terminology for older ones.

Feedback on your writing, not writing for you

Paste a paragraph or a draft and ask for feedback. The tutor will point out what's working, where your argument or evidence is thin, and which sentences are unclear, and it will explain why. It won't rewrite your essay for you to hand in: the goal is that your next piece of writing is better on your own. Always follow your school's rules on using AI.

Digital SAT Reading and Writing

Preparing for the Digital SAT? There are free skill guides for every Reading and Writing question type, such as Words in Context, transitions and punctuation, plus practice questions and full-length adaptive practice tests on the Digital SAT page.

Limits to know about

AI tutors can occasionally misread a text or be too confident about an interpretation. Literature often has more than one valid reading, and your teacher's guidance on what your course expects comes first. Quotations from set texts should always be checked against your own copy of the book.

Frequently asked questions
