How long is the SAT? Timing for every section and module

TutorAura guide · Updated

The Digital SAT takes 2 hours and 14 minutes, not counting breaks. There's a 10-minute break between the two sections, so the testing time with the break is 2 hours 24 minutes (College Board). Plan on being at the test centre for longer than that, because check-in and setting up the testing app take time too.

The test has two sections, each split into two modules with their own timers:

Key takeaways

  • 2 hours 14 minutes of testing, plus a 10-minute break between sections.
  • Reading and Writing: 54 questions in 64 minutes (two 32-minute modules).
  • Math: 44 questions in 70 minutes (two 35-minute modules).
  • That's about 71 seconds per Reading and Writing question and 95 seconds per Math question.

Reading and Writing, Module 22732 minutes

Math, Module 12235 minutes
Math, Module 22235 minutes

Each module ends when its time runs out, and you can't go back to a module once you've moved on. Within a module you can move between questions freely and mark questions to review.

Time per question

  • Reading and Writing: 64 minutes for 54 questions is about 71 seconds per question.
  • Math: 70 minutes for 44 questions is about 95 seconds per question (College Board).

Those are averages. Some questions take 20 seconds and others three minutes, so don't try to match the average on every question. A better check is where you are halfway through a module: in Reading and Writing, around question 14 at 16 minutes; in Math, around question 11 at 17 or 18 minutes.

Why the modules matter for timing

The Digital SAT is adaptive by module: how you do in the first module of a section decides whether the second module is easier or harder (College Board). That has two timing consequences:

  1. Module 1 deserves care. A rushed Module 1 can send you to the easier Module 2, which limits how high your score can go.
  2. Each module is timed separately. Time you save in one module doesn't carry over, so use the remaining minutes to check answers and marked questions.

Using the 10-minute break

The break comes between Reading and Writing and Math. Use it to stand up, have a drink and a snack, and reset. Math needs a different kind of focus, and the break is the only chance to recover before 70 more minutes of testing. Practise with the break included at least once, so the full length feels normal on test day.

How to build stamina for the full test

Doing short sets of questions builds skills, but it doesn't prepare you for concentrating for well over two hours. Take at least one or two full-length practice tests under real conditions: one sitting, timed, with the break.

You can take the College Board's free full-length tests in the Bluebook app, and TutorAura has a free full-length Digital SAT practice test with the same timing and adaptive modules, no sign-up needed. For a week-by-week schedule, see our SAT study plan.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the SAT with the break?

2 hours 24 minutes: 2 hours 14 minutes of testing plus the 10-minute break between Reading and Writing and Math. Check-in and setup add more time at the test centre.

How many questions are on the SAT?

98: 54 in Reading and Writing and 44 in Math. A few of them are unscored questions being tried out for future tests, and you can't tell which ones, so answer every question.

How long is each SAT module?

Reading and Writing modules are 32 minutes each (27 questions). Math modules are 35 minutes each (22 questions).

Can I go back to an earlier module?

No. Once a module ends, you move on to the next one. Within a module, you can go back to any question until time runs out.
