How is the Digital SAT scored? Scales, modules and guessing

TutorAura guide · Updated

The Digital SAT gives you a total score from 400 to 1600, made of two section scores from 200 to 800: one for Reading and Writing and one for Math (College Board). Section scores are reported in 10-point steps and each is half of the total.

What's different from older paper tests is how your answers turn into those scores: the test is adaptive by module, and your score takes into account which questions you answered correctly, not just how many.

Key takeaways

  • Total score 400–1600; Reading and Writing and Math are each 200–800.
  • Each section has two modules; Module 1 decides whether Module 2 is easier or harder.
  • Scoring considers which questions you got right, including their difficulty, not just a simple count.
  • There's no penalty for wrong answers, so answer every question.

The score scales

Total400–1600
Reading and Writing200–800
Math200–800

Score reports also show percentiles, which compare your score with other test takers (College Board).

How the adaptive modules work

Each section has two modules of equal length. Module 1 contains a mix of easy, medium and hard questions. Based on how you do in Module 1, you get either an easier or a harder Module 2 (College Board).

This is why your score isn't simply "number correct". The College Board uses item response theory to score the test: your score depends on which questions you answer correctly and on their difficulty, not just on how many you get right.

The practical lesson: Module 1 matters a lot. Careless mistakes in Module 1 can route you to the easier Module 2, which limits how high your section score can go.

Unscored questions

Each section includes a few pretest questions that are being tried out for future tests and don't count towards your score. According to the College Board's technical manual, there are four in Reading and Writing and four in Math. They look exactly like the other questions, so you can't tell which ones they are. Treat every question as if it counts.

Is there a penalty for guessing?

No. You're not marked down for a wrong answer, and a blank answer earns nothing (College Board). So never leave a question blank, even with seconds to go.

Guessing well is better than guessing randomly: rule out one or two choices you know are wrong first. The College Board notes that its scoring model accounts for patterns that suggest random guessing, which is another reason to make an informed choice rather than a blind one.

Why practice-test scores can differ

The exact conversion from your answers to a 200–800 section score uses calibration data that the College Board doesn't publish. The College Board's own paper practice tests use a simplified conversion table, which it describes as slightly less precise than the scoring on the real digital test.

That's why TutorAura's practice tests report raw scores (questions correct, by section, module, domain and skill) rather than estimating a 400–1600 score. Frequently asked questions

What is the highest score on the Digital SAT?

1600: 800 in Reading and Writing plus 800 in Math. The lowest possible total is 400.

Does getting the harder Module 2 mean a higher score?

It gives you access to the top of the scale, because the scoring takes the difficulty of the questions you answer correctly into account. Getting the easier Module 2 limits how high the section score can go.

Are all questions worth the same?

Not exactly. The Digital SAT is scored with item response theory, which takes the difficulty of the questions into account, so it isn't a simple count of correct answers.

Should I guess on the SAT?

Yes. There's no penalty for wrong answers, so never leave a question blank. Eliminate choices you know are wrong first to improve your odds.
