How to prepare for the PSAT: a 6-week plan
TutorAura guide · Updated
The PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 are digital, adaptive tests with the same structure as the SAT: a Reading and Writing section (54 questions, 64 minutes) and a Math section (44 questions, 70 minutes), each split into two modules (College Board). Scores run from 320 to 1520.
You don't need months of preparation. A focused six weeks, built around one timed practice test and targeted practice on your weakest skills, is enough for most students to feel confident and improve.
Key takeaways
- Same format as the Digital SAT: SAT practice tests are good PSAT practice.
- Start with a timed practice test, then focus on your weakest skills.
- Grammar rules and core algebra are often the quickest gains.
- For National Merit, Reading and Writing counts twice in the Selection Index.
What's on the PSAT
| Section | Questions | Time | What it tests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading and Writing | 54 (two modules) | 64 min | Comprehension, vocabulary in context, evidence, grammar and punctuation, transitions |
| Math | 44 (two modules) | 70 min | Algebra, advanced math, problem-solving and data analysis, geometry and trigonometry |
A built-in Desmos calculator is available for all of Math. Module 2 of each section is easier or harder depending on how you did in Module 1. For the full comparison, see PSAT vs SAT.
A 6-week plan
| Week | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 | Take a full-length timed practice test. Sort every mistake by skill and type (content, careless, timing). |
| 2 | Reading and Writing: learn the grammar rules that come up most. Practise 15 questions a day. |
| 3 | Math: linear equations and functions, percentages and ratios. Redo last week's misses. |
| 4 | Mixed practice across both sections, timed by module. Review the mistakes log. |
| 5 | Your two weakest skills from week 1. A second full timed test at the end of the week. |
| 6 | Light review: mistakes log, formulas, a few timed modules. Rest the day before. |
About 30 to 45 minutes on most days is plenty.
The quickest wins
- Grammar and punctuation. A small set of rules (sentence boundaries, semicolons and colons, apostrophes, agreement) covers many questions. See SAT grammar rules.
- Linear equations and functions. Common across Math, and quick to secure.
- Formulas not on the reference sheet, such as slope and the quadratic formula. See SAT Math formulas.
- Pacing. No penalty for guessing, so answer every question.
Free practice to use
- Official practice tests in the College Board's Bluebook app, including PSAT practice tests.
- TutorAura's free Digital SAT practice tests: a full-length adaptive test plus Math and Reading and Writing section tests, timed like the real thing, with results emailed. SAT questions are slightly harder at the top end, which is good preparation.
- Your school's materials and your previous PSAT score report, if you have one.
If you're aiming for National Merit
For juniors taking the PSAT/NMSQT, the National Merit Selection Index counts Reading and Writing twice: . If you're close to a cutoff, extra Reading and Writing points are worth twice as much. See the National Merit Scholarship.
Test day
Your school runs the PSAT, so follow its instructions: make sure Bluebook is installed and up to date on your device, complete any check-in steps your school asks for, charge your device, and get a good night's sleep. Read each question fully, mark hard questions for review rather than getting stuck, and use every minute.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I study for the PSAT?
Four to six weeks of focused practice, about 30 to 45 minutes on most days, is enough for most students.
Can I use SAT practice tests for the PSAT?
Yes. The structure and timing are the same; SAT questions are slightly harder at the top end.
Is there a penalty for wrong answers on the PSAT?
No. Answer every question, even if you have to guess.
Does the PSAT matter?
It's practice for the SAT and, for eligible juniors taking the PSAT/NMSQT, the entry to the National Merit Scholarship Program. Scores aren't sent to colleges.
