PSAT vs SAT: the differences, and how to practise for both

TutorAura guide · Updated

The PSAT/NMSQT and the SAT are built the same way. Both are digital, adaptive tests with a Reading and Writing section (54 questions, 64 minutes) and a Math section (44 questions, 70 minutes), each split into two modules: 2 hours 14 minutes in total (College Board).

The main differences are the score scale (the PSAT/NMSQT goes up to 1520, the SAT to 1600), slightly less difficult content on the PSAT, and why you take it: the PSAT/NMSQT is practice for the SAT and the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Key takeaways

  • Same structure: 98 questions, 2 hours 14 minutes, two adaptive modules per section.
  • PSAT/NMSQT scores run from 320 to 1520 on the same scale as the SAT's 400 to 1600.
  • A PSAT score predicts roughly what you'd score on the SAT if you took it that day.
  • A full-length Digital SAT practice test is good practice for both.

Scores: the same scale

The tests share a vertical scale, so scores mean the same thing: a 1100 on the PSAT/NMSQT is equivalent to an 1100 on the SAT (College Board). The PSAT/NMSQT tops out at 1520 because its questions are a little less difficult, so it can't measure the very top of the SAT's range.

That makes your PSAT score a useful baseline: it's roughly what you'd score on the SAT if you took it the same day.

Why the PSAT/NMSQT matters

  • Practice under real conditions: it's the closest thing to the SAT, taken at school.
  • National Merit Scholarship Program: for eligible students in 11th grade, the PSAT/NMSQT is the qualifying test.
  • Feedback: the score report shows how you did across the content domains, which tells you what to study for the SAT.

Most students take it in the autumn of 10th or 11th grade; your school decides the date.

How to practise for the PSAT and SAT

Because the structure is identical, the best practice for either test is a full-length, timed, adaptive Digital SAT practice test:

  1. Take the College Board's free practice tests in the Bluebook app (there are PSAT and SAT ones).
  2. Take TutorAura's free full-length Digital SAT practice test, which has the same timing and an easier or harder Module 2, plus section tests for Math and Reading and Writing.
  3. Review every mistake and work on the skills that cost you points. See our SAT study plan for a schedule.

Practising with SAT-level questions also means the PSAT will feel slightly easier on the day.

Is the SAT harder than the PSAT?

A little. The SAT includes more difficult questions, especially in its harder Module 2s, so it can measure higher scores. The format, timing and skills are the same, so the jump from PSAT to SAT is about the hardest questions, not new content. If your PSAT score is close to your SAT target, focus on accuracy in Module 1 and on the hard questions in your strongest domains.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PSAT the same as the SAT?

It has the same structure, timing, question types and adaptive modules, but it's scored from 320 to 1520 instead of 400 to 1600 and is a little less difficult at the top end.

Is a PSAT score the same as an SAT score?

They're on the same scale, so a PSAT/NMSQT score of 1100 is equivalent to an SAT score of 1100. It's a good estimate of what you'd score on the SAT that day.

Can I use SAT practice tests for the PSAT?

Yes. The structure and timing are the same, so full-length SAT practice tests are good PSAT practice; SAT questions are slightly harder at the top end.

Do colleges see PSAT scores?

PSAT/NMSQT scores aren't sent to colleges as part of your application. They're used for practice and for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
